Teaserbild Workshops Kinderhilfswerk

Project JugendBilder

A project to promote media literacy and participation

The project, sponsored by the Deutsches Kinderhilfswerk, offered young people the opportunity to express themselves with words and images in seven workshops. They were able to show how they see themselves and their topics, how they would like to be portrayed and how journalistic content should be prepared from their point of view.

Strengthening media and image skills

The project focused on promoting media literacy, in particular visual literacy. Participants learned to better understand visual content, critically question its impact and recognize manipulation. At the same time, they were given the space to contribute their own ideas and actively help shape content. This resulted in formats that were developed by young people for young people.

Practice-oriented workshops

A total of seven practical workshops were held at district schools and grammar schools in the Hamburg area, in which around 100 young people took part. The workshops offered low-threshold access to promote critical thinking, initiative and co-determination.
Needs-oriented workshop concept
As part of the accompanying evaluation, a workshop concept was developed together with the young people that was better tailored to their needs. Aspects such as information content, entertainment factor and relevance to everyday life played a central role.

Sensitization for visual content

Another aim of the project was to sensitize the participants to the importance of photojournalism and the impact of images. Topics such as recognizing deepfakes and reflecting on the concept of “truth” were important elements in enabling young people to become more aware of visual media.

The project created a space for exchange, learning and co-creation in which young people were actively involved in the development and implementation of content. This not only strengthened their media skills, but also opened up avenues for greater participation and personal responsibility.
