Tracing the Possible - from July 2025 in Arles - laif foundation for independent photojournalism

Around 150,000 guests visit one of the world’s most renowned photography festivals every year.

For the three-month duration of the festival, 7 laif photographers will be exhibiting works on the theme of “Tracing the Possible” at the Fondation Manuel Riviera-Ortiz.

How can we understand and rethink society in the context of climate change, territorial conflicts and questions of identity?

We question the status quo and invite you to rethink ideas of community, solidarity and happiness.

The photographs take a look at the paradoxical beauty of acceptance in a world that often excludes and divides.

“Tracing the Possible” allows for approaches in various areas of human life in the present and future. It draws attention to global issues such as education for all, tackling climate change, the fight against hunger, peaceful coexistence and the fair distribution of wealth. Utopia lives on a large and small scale and everywhere in between. Together and individually, we want to explore utopian landscapes. Utopias show an alternative to the status quo, they criticize the status quo.
