Hamburg, June 5, 2024
On June 5, 2024, the non-profit laif foundation will open its Berlin office at Publix. Publix is a place where organizations such as CORRECTIV, Good News, Reporters Without Borders and others work openly and collaboratively on the future of journalism, technology and democracy. A media house for a new era. With its focus on photojournalism and media literacy, the laif foundation develops innovative projects to strengthen an informed society.
Against disinformation and fake news
We live in a world of increasing disinformation, in which fact and fake are becoming more and more blurred. People can hardly judge the truthfulness of images in the media. “That’s why we are working on a seal for the authenticity of photos, for example,” explains Ulf Schmidt-Funke, Managing Director of the laif foundation. “Because if we can no longer trust our eyes, we need reliable and independent institutions for the credibility of images and texts,” Schmidt-Funke continued.
Photojournalism and media literacy for an informed society
In view of the current social challenges, the laif foundation focuses its projects on three main areas: Social cohesion, climate change and sustainability, equal opportunities and diversity. Another focus is practical media skills training for young people. Experienced photojournalists use the medium of photography to arouse interest in critical media reflection and news evaluation.
The laif group, a special family of agencies.
The laif photo agency has stood for excellent photojournalism with attitude and responsibility worldwide since 1981. Its sister, the non-profit laif foundation gGmbH, was founded in 2023. Its mission is to promote photojournalism and media literacy for an informed society and a strong democracy. The umbrella organization for both companies is the laif cooperative, which currently comprises 370 photographers and people from various groups in civil society. The laif Group has offices in Berlin, Hamburg and Cologne.
As a non-profit organization, the laif foundation relies on donations and sponsors in order to pursue its charitable goals.
