The laif foundation for independent photojournalism invites young people aged 10 to 18 to show us their view of the world as part of a photo competition. Under the motto “Be you. Be seen. Be heard.”, participants from the most diverse social groups possible can submit their own photo stories on a topic that is important to them as a team effort.
New photojournalistic training program
This particularly low-threshold format encourages young people to engage with new topics and opinions and to enter into an open dialog with others in a self-effective manner.
“In times of AI, disinformation and fake news, our competition uses accompanying information material to promote media literacy among young people,” explains Ulf Schmidt-Funke, Managing Director of the laif foundation. “It also shows young people simple and exciting photographic ways to voice their concerns through their own actions and thereby enable change – a basic skill for democratic participation,” adds Marco Larousse, who is in charge of the project.
The competition is also particularly helpful for the work of organizations such as schools, sports clubs, youth centers or refugee aid facilities. This provides them with a motivating and free additional offer that arouses interest in photography and also pursues important social and educational goals.
Award ceremony and exhibition
The prizes, endowed with 1,000 euros, will be awarded in May 2025. Workshops for school classes and youth groups on media skills training and teaching basic photojournalistic knowledge are also planned for this event.
The deadline for entries is March 30, 2025. Further information can be found on the photo competition website at www.jugendfotografiert.org.
