DENEFF: Bringing energy efficiency to society
In the RE:DESIGN EFFICIENCY creative competition, the Deutsche Unternehmensinitiative Energieeffizienz e.V. (DENEFF) set the task of using photographs, graphics or illustrations to make the invisible – the unused kilowatt hour – visible.
At the closing event, we reported on the initial results and assessments from the “Visual solutions for science communication” think tank that we initiated at the beginning of 2024.
tide symposium on media education and journalism
The symposium highlighted topics relating to media education, journalism and editorial society in discussion rounds, lectures, workshops and workshop talks. The symposium is embedded in a forum for producers, cooperation partners and civil society actors.
In this context, our presentation on “AI in photojournalism” provided an impetus for a lively discussion on journalistic and ethical challenges in dealing with artificial intelligence.
PUBLIX Opening
Publix is a new, concrete place in Berlin where the future of journalism and the public sphere can be thought about, negotiated, tried out and communicated to citizens. For the opening in summer 2024, director Maria Exner and her team curated a programme together with the organizations in the building that gave experts and multipliers a first insight into the work of Publix. At the invitation of the laif foundation, Danish documentary photographer Mads Nissen presented his photo reportage “SANGRE BLANCA – THE LOST WAR ON COCAINE” as part of the Opening Conference. In it, he delves into the dark depths of the cocaine trade and examines the human consequences of the drug’s journey from the neglected rural areas of Colombia to the greedy consumers on the dance floors of Europe. His presentation was met with great interest: The relevance of the work was also illustrated by the many questions from the audience. Mads was also able to make valuable contacts with journalists in Berlin.
University projects
Research, development, exchange of ideas We work regularly with universities and various specialist areas to share our experience and gain new impetus on our core topics. Here are a few of the current collaborations:
b° future festival
With the b° future festival in October, the Bonn Institute brought together for the second time all those who are committed to future-oriented journalism. laif was on site as a partner of the b° future festival with several events!
Hamburg Press Freedom Week
Freedom of the press is in danger – at all levels, globally and locally. With their initiative, the Körber Foundation and the ZEIT STIFTUNG BUCERIUS want to raise public awareness of the issue as an important element of pluralism and democracy. The value of freedom of the press for democracy and peaceful coexistence is elementary. That is why everyone is called upon to defend freedom of the press – at all times and everywhere with determination. laif has been a partner for press photography with visuals and lectures from the very beginning. Most recently with a lecture and screening of the award-winning photo project “Zuhause riecht es nach Rauch”.
